Aguirre fired a one-hitter and made a first-inning run by her teammates stand up, as Alvin edged the Lady Wildcats 1-0 in 24-6A Softball action.
The victory kept the Lady Yellowjackets (23-5 overall, 8-0) in sole possession of first place in the district standings and also marked the third consecutive game Aguirre only surrendered one hit or less. After firing a no-hitter against Cy-Fair to close the Haynie Spirit Tourney the previous weekend, Aguirre one-hit the Clear Lake Lady Falcons on April 2. In Friday’s contest, the junior fanned seven and coaxed Creek into hitting eight infield pop-ups.
“It feels like a load off now, but during the game, it was pretty stressful,” Aguirre said. “That was a really good team I faced out there. I didn’t get as many strikeouts tonight, but I kept them off balance.
“The pop-ups came from the spin (placed on the ball). I knew this was a good hitting team and I just relied all on my spin tonight and hitting my spots to keep them off balance.”
The Lady Jackets cashed in on a two-out single by Clarissa Barron and a pair of Lady Wildcats’ miscues to score the game’s lone tally in the bottom of the first inning. Barron stole second base and when the throw by Creek catcher Maddie Petrella sailed into center field, Barron motored towards third and ultimately scored on another throwing miscue by the Lady Wildcats’ outfield.
Aguirre escaped a second and third base runner jam in the fifth with an inning-ending strikeout of Danielle Dunavant. While Cee Cee Huff broke up the junior’s no-hit bid with two outs in the sixth, Aguirre promptly retired the side in order in the seventh to close it out.
