Alvin Lady Yellowjackets’ senior pitcher Rachel Hertenberger and Manvel Lady Mavericks’ junior catcher Brianna Garcia headed the area selections to the 2018 Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sportswriters Association’s All-State Softball Teams. Hertenberger was named to the first team in Class 6A, while Garcia gained a second team nod in Class 5A. Lady Mavericks’ first baseman Riley Bennett and third baseman Alexis Uresti both earned honorable mention status. The TSWA honored Hertenberger for the third straight year with the University of Houston signee collecting third team accolades in 2017 and honorable mention status in 2016. Garcia and Uresti were also both honorable mention picks last year. Hertenberger, also a two-time All-District 24-6A MVP and All-Greater Houston Area Second team selection, closed her high school career as the all-time strikeout leader in Alvin Lady Jacket history with 927 K’s. e Alvin single season (326) and game (23) strikeout marks, as well, while tying for the most wins (24) in a season. Garcia delivered a team-leading .610 batting average for the Lady Mavs with 39 RBI’s, 35 runs scored, 12 doubles and two triples, while Bennett spanked the ball at a .535 clip with 43 RBI’s, 22 runs scored and nine doubles. Uresti batted .449 with 21 RBI’s, 43 runs scored and seven doubles Teams were selected by TSWA members, based on nominations from coaches and sportswriters from around the state.
