Senior hurler Rachel Hertenberger was named the most valuable player for the second straight year to head the bi-district finalist Alvin Lady Yellowjackets’ four selections to the All-District 24-6A Softball team.

The University of Houston signee was joined on the first team by senior outfielder Avery Hern, while David McCorkle earned the coach of the year award.

Hertenberger delivered a record breaking season in the circle with a school record 326 strikeouts and 24 victories, which tied Amber Anderson for the most wins in Lady Jacket history for a single season. The 326 strikeouts also ranked third in the state and 12th nationally.

Hertenberger also reached the Alvin record book with a 23 strikeout performance in 11 innings here against Clear Springs March 6 and ended her high school career with 874 K’s, which also ranks first among Alvin pitchers all time.

The senior hurler worked all 11 frames in the circle in the Springs’ contest and faced only four batters over the minimum, allowing one hit and one walk, while the other two Lady Chargers reached base on Alvin errors.

“I wasn’t really tired until about the 10th inning,” Hertenberger said following the epic 161-pitch outing. “I felt really good. I was just trying to throw strikes and get outs. I went out there and got into my zone. I had a really good warm-up today.”

Hearn batted .333 with 17 RBI’s, 17 runs scored and eight doubles.

The Lady Jackets captured their second straight district crown and advanced to the playoffs for the 22nd time in the last 23 years.

Senior catcher Ciara Jimenez and senior designated player Mackenzie Savage both gained second team nods, while Grace Coffelt and Mary Pourcio earned honorable mention status.

Jimenez batted .381 with 18 RBI’s. Savage also drove in 14 runs and the winning walk-off RBI single in the Lady Jackets’ 1-0 win over Clear Creek here April 6. Pourcio delivered a walk-off single to lift Alvin to a 2-1 victory over Clear Falls here March 20.

Other first team selections included catcher Madison Petrella (Clear Creek); infielders Kendall Cross, (Friendswood), Malorie Langford (Clear Springs), Brianna Aranzeta (Clear Creek) and Patricia Yarotsky (Friendswood); outfielders Hannah Crawford, (Clear Springs), Christiana Winger (Clear Brook) and Reagan Jones (Friendswood); pitcher Kelly Maxwell (Clear Springs); designated player Chelsi Olvera (Clear Falls); utility player Kaylee Thomas (Clear Springs); and at-large picks Baylee Klingler (Dickinson) and Meagan Lee (Clear Creek).

Clear Springs’ Demi Elder was selected as the district’s top newcomer.
